Market-Moving News

It's not noise—it's architecture.

What looks like a data breach is a crisis of trust. What sounds like a Bitcoin buy is a corporate realignment.

And what reads like a portfolio update? That might be the foundation of tomorrow's global dollar.

Macro Trends

Tether Now Holds More US Treasury Bills Than Germany

Tether now holds over $120 billion in US Treasury bills, surpassing Germany's $111.4 billion and making it the 19th largest T-bill holder globally. The stablecoin giant revealed the milestone in its Q1 2025 attestation report, highlighting a conservative reserve strategy designed to withstand crypto volatility.

Tether's asset mix also includes gold, which the firm says "almost offset" losses from the crypto market's downturn earlier this year. The strategy generated over $1 billion in operating profit from traditional investments in Q1 alone, with Treasurys playing a central role in stabilizing its reserves.

The issuer's scale underscores its role in distributing dollar liquidity across the global digital asset market. In 2024, Tether was the seventh-largest Treasury buyer worldwide, beating out several countries, including Canada, Taiwan, and Mexico.

Meanwhile, stablecoin regulation remains a work in progress. The STABLE Act is advancing, but the GENIUS Act recently stalled amid political tensions.

Still, growing regulatory clarity may increase institutional demand for USDt, boosting Tether's Treasury hoard even further.

For investors, this shows Tether isn't just a market heavyweight—it's becoming a systemic player in global liquidity. The more resilient its reserves, the more confidence users and institutions may place in stablecoins—and in the protocols that power them.

Metaplanet Buys Another 1,004 BTC, Closing in on Top 10

Metaplanet has acquired 1,004 BTC for roughly $104.6 million, pushing its total holdings to 7,800 BTC worth over $800 million. It's the firm's second-largest purchase to date, trailing only its 1,241 BTC buy from earlier this month.

With this move, Metaplanet edges closer to overtaking Galaxy Digital Holdings (8,100 BTC) and strengthening its position as Asia's largest corporate Bitcoin holder. It now ranks 10th globally among public companies in BTC ownership, according to BiTBO.

The firm's BTC yield hit 95.6% in Q1 and 47.8% so far this quarter, signaling aggressive accumulation and high investor confidence. It's also raising another $21 million through bond sales, specifically to buy more Bitcoin.

This latest wave of buying coincides with Bitcoin flirting with all-time highs. And while Saylor's MicroStrategy still dominates the leaderboard, Metaplanet's fast-paced strategy is helping to normalize corporate Bitcoin treasuries in Asia.

Metaplanet's moves may inspire other regional firms to follow suit, especially if Bitcoin continues to outperform traditional stores of value. For investors, this trend signals deepening corporate conviction and potential long-term price support at institutional levels.

Coinbase Faces Six Lawsuits Over Insider-Led Data Breach

Coinbase is under legal fire after disclosing a major data breach where support agents were bribed to leak user info. At least six lawsuits have been filed since May 15, claiming the exchange failed to protect sensitive customer data and mishandled the fallout.

The stolen data includes names, emails, phone numbers, partial Social Security numbers, and even snapshots of account balances and transactions. Plaintiffs allege Coinbase's response was slow and inadequate, leaving users vulnerable to fraud and identity theft.

The lawsuits demand a mix of damages and proactive measures, from data purges to mandatory security audits. One suit accuses Coinbase of unjust enrichment by skimping on data security spending despite its large war chest.

Coinbase confirmed it refused to pay the $20 million ransom and estimates reimbursements could cost up to $400 million. COIN stock initially fell 7% on the news but has since bounced back 9%, showing investor confidence remains intact—for now.

This is a warning shot for exchanges: trust is fragile, and security lapses carry steep costs. For investors, it's a reminder to weigh platform risk carefully, especially when it comes to centralized custodians in a decentralized ecosystem.

Crypto Know-How: What's Restaking?

Restaking means using your already-staked tokens to earn even more rewards by helping secure other networks. It's like putting your money to work twice, without needing extra crypto.

Platforms like EigenLayer let you restake ETH you've already staked through services like Lido. This adds security to new projects while giving you extra rewards on top of what you're already earning.

It's still early and not without risk—your funds could be slashed if something goes wrong. But for investors, restaking could be a way to boost yield without giving up staking benefits.

That wraps it up for now—if we missed a move, drop us a line. Appreciate you riding the rhythm—see you on the next pulse.
